This past weekend I was introduced to a card game named Fluxx. I’ll tell you a little about the game in a moment. First, though, I want you to know that this games is great on many different levels.
- The game is very fun, you can play with 2-4 (maybe even 6) players, and the game is over in an average of 10 minutes. Longer games may run up to 30 minutes.
- The company that sells Fluxx is small time. They have sold around a half million copies of the game, but not at major retail outlets. They are just some good game makers who sell games through mom and pop shops and online.
- They support the fans of the games with online forums and expansion cards.
Ok, on to the game play.
Everyone gets 3 cards (from a ~100 card deck) to start the game and the first person to call it gets to go first. At the beginning of the game there are only 2 rules and no way to win. The rules are that each of you takes turns drawing one card from the stack and playing one card from your hand. Each card that is played has the potential to change one of the rules of the game. For example, I might play a card that changes the “draw one card†rule to a “draw 5 cards†rule. So the rules of the game are constantly changing. Also, there are cards that let you establish (or change) how the game is won. Someone might play a card that says to win the game you need 10 cards in your hand, but the next player could replace that with a different goal to win the game.
The learning curve on this game is about one half hour. The first couple times you play, you will have to read all the cards carefully, but once you get the hand of it you will not have pause the game to read the cards anymore.
I highly suggest you get this game, it’s easy to pack on trips and is perfect to play at coffee shops/bookstores. You can order it through independent game stores on the Amazon Marketplace:
